Suleman Annual Grant for Arts recipient for the year 2024

Mehrosh Alam (Chitral, KPK)

I have been working closely on the music of Chitral with the lens of gender. I have done extensive research on the topic, “Gender politics of Music in Chitrali Khow Culture” over a period of one year. Being a girl from Chitral who has always wanted to learn music and was not able to due to the cultural barriers, this topic has been very close to my heart. Music is one of the unique and integral parts of Chitrali Kho culture and no celebration or festival goes without musical performances. Yet the participation and representation of women in such events is close to zero, except in some as audiences only. The special setting of the events are also gendered. The history of Chitral also shows that there have been no known female musicians, vocalists or instrumentalists except for some emerging artists who are testing their luck on online platforms now. Thus, I tried to explore and analyze what kind of gender politics exist in the Kho community of Chitral and the online platforms providing space for women to express themselves through music…I have worked on a short documentary based on the data collected titled ‘Food for the soul’. Through the documentary, I have tried to question if music is food for soul, why women are deprived of it?
